3G Phones

3G phones have been taking the world by storm, with Australians taking up the new technology with incredible enthusiasm. Within the next few years, 3G phones in Australia could outnumber older generation mobiles, only a few years after the initial rollout of a 3G phone network in 2003.

Its easy to see why 3G phones are so popular with so many more forms of accessibility, such as high speed Internet browsing and email access. Why limit yourself to standard voice calls and text messages, when 3G phones can let you communicate with online call tools such as Skype or instant messaging services? Just when you think youve used everything 3G phones have to offer, something new becomes available for use on 3G phones.

How many networks are available?

Networks for 3G phones are becoming increasingly common, with the original networks of Telstra and Three mobile having been joined by Optus and Vodafone. The Telstra Next G network for 3G phones has extensive network coverage, far ahead of the competition at the moment. Provided by the largest telecommunications provider in Australia, Next G for 3G phones has been a major force behind 3G expansion since its inception. Three mobile have also maintained a strong presence, with an initial marketing push that gave them a great deal of popularity amongst early adopters of 3G phones.

Only recently have Optus and Vodafone entered with their own networks for 3G phones, but as both have announced they will be carrying the newly released and highly anticipated 3G iPhone there is a great opportunity for fast network expansion.

What can 3G phones offer?

3G phones are all about variety in communication coupled with maximum mobility. Rather than having to restrict yourself to a fixed access point when you need to use the Internet, 3G phones can give you greater freedom by acting as wireless hotspots for web use. Not all 3G phones offer this, but if you choose the right ones you could go online with your laptop in any location with 3G coverage in Australia. Many modern 3G phones include their own interfaces for online activity, however, so you could take the whole online experience with you as long as you choose the right 3G phones.
